Milestones are skills most children learn at a similar age, such as smiling, sitting, walking and speaking. Every child is different, and a small difference is usually not a worry. A pattern of delay, or lost skills, deserves a check.
Talk to a doctor if your child
- Is not holding their head steady by about four months
- Is not sitting without support by about nine months
- Is not walking by about 18 months
- Has no meaningful words by about 18 months to two years
- Has lost skills they previously had
- Has stiff or very floppy muscles, or unusual repeated movements
Why early help matters
A child's brain adapts very well in the early years. Early assessment, therapy and support give the best chance for a child to reach their potential. A paediatric neurologist can examine your child, explain what is happening and plan the next steps with you.
