Kidney Stones: Causes, Symptoms and Prevention

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form from minerals in the urine. Small stones may pass on their own, but larger ones can cause severe pain and block the flow of urine.

Symptoms

  • Sharp pain in the side or back that may spread to the lower abdomen or groin
  • Pain or burning when passing urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Nausea, vomiting, and sometimes fever

Reducing your risk

  • Drink plenty of water, enough to pass pale urine through the day
  • Cut down on salt
  • Do not take calcium supplements unless your doctor advises it
  • Follow any diet advice given after your tests

See a doctor promptly for severe pain, fever with urinary symptoms or if you cannot pass urine, as these need urgent treatment.
