Acidity, or heartburn, is a burning feeling in the chest or upper stomach that can rise towards the throat. Many people feel it after a heavy or spicy meal. When it happens often, it may be acid reflux (GERD) or another stomach problem.
Everyday steps that help
- Eat smaller meals and avoid lying down for two to three hours after eating
- Limit very spicy, oily and fried food, and cut down on tea, coffee and fizzy drinks if they trigger symptoms
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Raise the head end of the bed slightly if symptoms are worse at night
Do not ignore these signs
- Symptoms lasting more than two to three weeks, or returning again and again
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing
- Weight loss without trying, or loss of appetite
- Vomiting blood or black stools
Your gastroenterologist may advise an upper GI endoscopy to look at the food pipe and stomach and find the cause.
