Most people have a headache now and then. A migraine is different: it is a neurological condition that often brings throbbing pain, usually on one side, along with other symptoms.
Common features of migraine
- Moderate to severe throbbing pain, often on one side of the head
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, sound or smells
- Pain that gets worse with routine activity
- Visual changes or tingling before the headache in some people
Common triggers
Missed meals, poor or irregular sleep, stress, dehydration, strong smells and, for some people, certain foods. Keeping a simple diary of your headaches helps you and your doctor find your pattern.
When to see a neurologist
Book a visit if headaches are becoming more frequent or severe, are not helped by usual pain medicines, or limit your work and daily life. A sudden, very severe headache, or a headache with weakness, confusion, fever with a stiff neck or a seizure needs urgent medical care.
