The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that controls how fast the body uses energy. If it makes too little or too much hormone, many parts of the body are affected.
Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Tiredness and feeling cold
- Weight gain and constipation
- Dry skin, hair thinning and low mood
- Irregular periods in women
Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
- Weight loss despite a good appetite
- Fast heartbeat, sweating and feeling hot
- Anxiety, trembling hands and trouble sleeping
How it is checked
A simple blood test (TSH, with T3 and T4 if needed) shows how the thyroid is working. Some people also need an ultrasound of the neck. Thyroid problems are usually well controlled with the right treatment and regular follow-up.
