Warning Signs of Stroke: Why Every Minute Counts

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel bursts. Brain cells begin to be damaged within minutes, so quick action can change the outcome.

Warning signs

  • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, usually on one side
  • Drooping of one side of the face or a crooked smile
  • Trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden blurred vision or loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Sudden severe headache, dizziness or loss of balance

What to do

Do not wait to see if the symptoms pass. Note the time they started and go to the nearest hospital with emergency care straight away, or call 108 or 112 for an ambulance. Do not give food, water or medicines before a doctor has checked the patient.

Lowering your risk

High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and an irregular heartbeat all raise the risk of stroke. Regular check-ups, taking medicines as prescribed, being active and avoiding tobacco help protect you.
